Dear Bud Adams: Attitude Reflects Leadership

It was a miserable season in Tennessee no matter how you slice it. The Titans, coming off a 9-7 record in 2011 struggled to win 6 games and were blown out repeatedly, losing by double digits in most games and struggling to score points or stop other opponents from scoring.  Coming off the bye week, the team lost to a one win Jacksonville Jaguars team and were grossly outplayed and out-coached by the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. The Titans won one division game in 2012.

To add insult to injury, the Titans were unable to defend their home stadium, winning only 4 games at LP Field. Once a bastion of wins for Titans teams, LP Field was the site of one of the team's worst losses since moving to Nashville, a 51-20 annihilation by the Chicago Bears on November 4 where Adams noted there were more Bears fans than Titans fans in the stands. Attendance was so poor the stadium wasn't even half full on the last game of the season but Adams wouldn't know that since he didn't bother to show up himself.

So how does Adams respond to the dismal season and the waning support and interest by fans? He fires the executive VP and COO of the Titans! Why you might ask? Mike Reinfeldt didn't deliver Peyton Manning to Adams on a silver platter. Yeah that makes sense and will totally fix the situation with the Titans. Am I right?

An organization is only as good as the leadership at the top and Adams has long been viewed as a big part of the issues plaguing first the Oilers in Houston and now the Titans in Nashville. Adams has a problem taking responsibility for his actions and that has certainly been reflected by the attitude of many Titans, especially some players who were expected to provide a boost and leadership in the past.

Adams never wants to admit he is wrong and you see that in past decision-making. Exhibit A: Young, Vince. He let that situation simmer and boil over to the point it divided the team and ultimately cost him millions of dollars, a high draft pick and longtime coach Jeff Fisher. 

For the record I like head coach Mike Munchak. I think he is a standup guy and a complete departure from the lack of accountability shown by his owner. He was thrown into an unenviable situation taking over for Jeff Fisher and I think he has done his best to coach the Titans to the best of his ability. However, the coaching in 2012 was substandard and the Titans underperformed badly. Adams himself acknowledged this more than once.

Despite that, once again Adams can't or won't acknowledge that perhaps he made a mistake. He will sacrifice another year to an experiment that may or may not work without consideration of the effect. The promise of changes to staffing doesn't inspire much confidence since that means the current situation may  become even more entrenched. I realize Munchak has only had 2 years but nothing about this season inspires you to think the Titans are headed in the right direction.

Now would have been the perfect opportunity to move on and hire an experienced coaching staff but that would require accountability that is sadly lacking. Attitude reflects leadership Mr. Adams. Where is yours?

On Mike Munchak's Job Security

Beat writer Jim Wyatt recently reported that Titans head coach Mike Munchak has two years remaining on his contract meaning he is signed through the 2014 season and not the 2013 season like his coaching staff. Munchak’s annual salary is reported to be between $2.75 million and $3 million. This means Munchak is safe for one more year at least right?

Not so fast. Regardless of whether Munchak makes changes to his lame duck coaching staff, his job is clearly not safe. I like Munchak he comes across as a very personable fella and a class act. Yet, no one watching the Titans thinks they are a well coached football team. People I respect who know football have privately told me the Titans are very poorly coached in most positions. Count me as one who certainly believes it is a good possibility that Titans owner Bud Adams will find a way to part ways with Munchak after a dismal 2012 season.

Adams is largely viewed as a tightwad but he is clearly willing to spend money when he believes the situation calls for it. It was largely reported Adams paid then head coach Jeff Fisher $8 million dollars to part ways with him. Further, a good case could certainly be made that Munchak's contract could be terminated "for cause." In any event, his contract certainly isn't prohibitive to moving on.

I also disagree that an extra year gives Munchak more flexibility in bringing in coaching staff. I just find it hard to believe a good coordinator or up and coming assistant would be willing to risk taking a flier on a one year deal when there are likely to be far more attractive options available. In fact, in my mind this makes it even more likely that Munchak could get the boot since obtaining quality staff is going to be an issue and there seems to be little justification to expend money delaying the inevitable.

 

Clearly Adams is the wild card here and what a wild card. Adams is pushing 90 and surely he understands his time is limited. While a good case can be made for "staying the course" an equally compelling argument can be made for going out and spending the money to get a proven winner in at the head coaching position and to make a push for a Superbowl while Adams is still around to celebrate it.

Vince Young Comes Clean

Titan's fans from all over tuned in on Saturday evening to see their team get a win over the Redskins in the preseason opener, and to get a glimpse of star quarterback and Madden coverboy Vince Young. They were disappointed in both regards.

Head Coach Jeff Fisher suspended Young from the game for violation of a team rule and the Titans dropped the game at L.P. Field 14-6. "I made a decision to not allow Vince to play in the ball game for violating a team rule, period. End of story,'' Fisher said. "He will be back practicing Monday with his teammates. He is our starting quarterback and we like him. He is going to be a good quarterback. … I am done talking about it.''

Saturday night saw Vince sidelined, covering his face with a towel on occasion and refusing to talk to reporters about the incident. What team rule was broken remained unknown. Until today.

Team rules require a player with less than 4 years on the squad to stay at a hotel near the stadium the night before a game. Vince chose to ignore that rule and drove home to sleep.

“I apologize to my teammates, coaches, fans and everybody,’’ Young said. “I really feel like I am not a bad guy, but I made a bad decision to try to go home and get some rest in my own bed.

The Titan's quarterback was made example to the team in hopes that the 2007 season can be one without incident.

"I broke the rules, I can’t play. You have to go by the rules,’’ Young said. “It happens, I was the one that got singled out and being one of the leaders I can’t do that

Young will resume his role as starting quarterback in Friday's preseason game in New England.
